Do not put the Lord your God to the test. (Luke 4:12 NRSV Bible)
Are we tempted to put God to the test? Luke says, "Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,' and 'On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.'" Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"

Jesus temptation here was to put the promises of God to the test. After all the devil himself countered Jesus earlier scripture rebuttals with one of his own from Psalm 91:11 & 12, "He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you," and "On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone."

Do we put the promises of God to the test? I believe one of the ways we do this the most is through prayer. Jesus said, in Matthew 21:22, "Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive." How many times have we asked for something in prayer, and, when we didn't get the answer we wanted, we got mad at God, or we doubted the promises of God? I believe we put God to the test when we offer our prayers to God and then have a certain expectation as to what the answer should be. God does answer our prayers, but sometimes we don't get the answer we want.

Jesus said, "Do not put the Lord your God to the test."

Dear God, forgive me for putting you to the test. May my faith in you be sufficient. Amen.
