My eyes are awake before each watch of the night, that I may meditate on your promise.
(Psalm 119.148 NRSV)

In the movie, City Slickers, Mitch, played by Billy Crystal, asked Curly the rugged, leather-faced cowboy played by Academy Award winner, Jack Palance, "What is the secret of life?" Curly held up one gloved finger and replied, "Just one thing. Figure out that one thing and nothing else matters." For Mitch, the young city slicker, the one thing that was most important was his family, but he had to learn that.

For followers of Jesus, there is something even more important than family. There is "one thing" that is more important than any other in life. It is to have God reign in our hearts and lives. It is to have God at the center of everything we do. It is to have an inner assurance that we are never alone or forsaken. It is to have a motivating force in our lives that causes us to be more than we could ever be on our own.

Dear God, thank you for always being with me. Amen.
