Answer me when I call, O God of my right! You gave me room when I was in distress. Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.
(Psalm 4.1
NRSV)
In it he tells about a lost love. There was a certain young woman whom he did not think he could live without. He even prayed nightly that God would let him make her his wife. It did not happen. Now he looks back and compares his lost love with the woman he did marry and he realizes there is no comparison. And he gratefully sings in the chorus: "Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers."
And it's true. Often, we pray for things so earnestly. We believe that our life will just not be complete unless we receive them. When they don't come out as we planned, we are crushed! Later, though, we come to see that God was there all along. All things do work to the good for those who love Him. Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.
Dear God, thank you for listening to my prayers and for giving me what I really need. Amen.
