Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.”
(John 6.11-12 NRSV)

Can't you imagine the expression of disbelief that must have been on the disciples' faces? They thought they didn't have enough but Jesus proved they had plenty. Can't you see them punching each other in the side afterward and saying, "Can you believe what just happened? Can you believe it? Awesome!"

The feeding of the five thousand is the only miracle recorded in all four of the gospels. The people present that day would remember those events for the rest of their lives. And no wonder. On that hillside long ago Jesus gave his followers a foretaste of the heavenly banquet that is yet to comea banquet prepared from the foundations of the earth for those who believe in him.

Dear God, thank you for the many ways you give me a taste of heaven. Amen.
