Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal.
(Matthew 6.20 NRSV)

Wise people today know there is very little security anymore. Jobs can be lost, pension plans can be robbed. And then there is government social security programs, will they be there when we need it? Anybody who doesn't plan carefully for the future today is foolish indeed.

Even more foolish is laying up treasure for this world only. Dr. Maurice Boyd, former pastor of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City, comments: "Jesus found many who lived as though this world was going to be their home forever, never looking beyond it...." There are many people making the same mistake today. The shrewd manager looks beyond the present circumstances. So should we. It is possible to be rich in things and to be bankrupt with God.

Loving God, may I manage well my spiritual bank account. Amen.
