But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
(Luke 11.33-34 NRSV)

Suffering is a universal human phenomenon. Nobody can escape the heartache and sorrow of life. Everyone is subject to illness and grief. At one time or another we all will have to endure lost dreams and shattered ambitions. Money, power, and prestige offer no protection against such anguish. We are all neighbors, for you and I share the same physical, emotional, and spiritual distress. In the parable Jesus asked us to realize that the individual along the side of the road hurts as much as you or I have in a similar circumstance. Jesus hopes we will entertain the weary traveler's agony as our own.
Dear God, thank you for the comfort you have given me in my time of need. With the power of your love, help me to share your comfort for those in need. Amen.
