Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds among mortals.
(Psalm 66.5 NRSV)

One of the most famous paintings in the world is that of Michelangelo's majestic work on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel of God reaching down to Adam. Study that painting carefully and you will see that God is doing most of the reaching. God strains with great effort to reach humanity. Man, on the other hand, seems rather apathetic about the whole matter and makes only a feeble attempt to reach God. Maybe that is why we read these words:

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away." And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new."

Did you hear that? God's dwelling is among mortals. "He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away." Doesn't that make you want to shout for joy? That's who God is. That is what God is doing.

Lord Jesus, strengthen my faith and my love for you so that I can be more consistently obedient to our Father in heaven. Amen.
