Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe;
(Hebrews 12.28 NRSV)

Author Gordon MacDonald was the guest of friends in London for the parade of the queen's Horse Guards to honor her birthday. The event is called the "Trooping of the Color." MacDonald said that it was truly an awesome moment when the queen entered the parade grounds sitting astride a coal black horse and reviewed her guards. They all stood, and MacDonald could feel the powerful sense of esteem and affection that the British felt for their queen. He writes, "Not a person moved; there was no sound to be heard except the horses' hoofbeats. Every eye was fixed upon the queen. One hardly dared breathe. So this, I thought, is what it is like to give reverence to majesty. This is something of what it might be like to stand with the company of saints before the throne of God in silence or in loud praise and to worship the Lord of Heaven and earth."

Majesty. Reverence. Awe. Touching God requires that we recognize who God is.

Dear God, help me to know you more fully with each day that passes. Amen.
