May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
(1 Thessalonians 5.23 NRSV)

A hospital patient was in an accident and was left only with her sense of smell. She could not speak, she could not hear, she could not see, but she could smell. Her mother wanted to communicate her presence, so she used a perfume the girl would remember as her mom's. Now the perfume is not the mother's essential nature, but is an extension of her real self to communicate on the girl's level.

God needed to communicate to you and me on our level. So God became flesh, and as flesh, God reached out God's hand to all who would receive God's invitation.

We might say that through the Incarnation God has hand-delivered to each of us an invitation to participate with God in the very best God has to offer. Can we understand how wonderful a gift this invitation is? Imagine with me that the invitation has just been placed in your hand. Open it and read. On it you will read John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son; that whosoever believes on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Now let each of us look at this invitation and in the place of "world" and "whosoever" put in our own name. As you repeat the verse, do you feel how personal this invitation is for you? God has prepared great blessings for God's people. God has given each of us a personal invitation.

God of peace, thank you for personally caring about my soul. I will accept your invitation. Amen.
