For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ
Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 6.23
NRSV)
Dr. Curtis Schofield wrote, "I remember my pastor, Dr. Ed Berwanger, who said to me one
day in his office, 'Curtis, I cannot tell you whether or not you
should go to Cleveland to work in the factories with your uncles.
But I can tell you this for sure. God has a plan for your life,
and if you ask Him, God will reveal it to you.' That insight so
burned in my mind that I went to the church library every evening
after school to study the Bible and to read great Christian books.
While reading Catherine Marshal's book, A MAN CALLED PETER, I
discovered that Jesus Christ is personally interested in every
individual's life. I knelt in the library of the church and
offered myself to be His disciple. One way I can repay the debt I
owe to Ed Berwanger for pointing me to the Savior, is to give the
same direction to others who are lost and seeking to find the way
to life."
And that is why you and I need to offer Christ to the people
in our world. We have a debt to pay to pastors and parents and
teachers and friends who have introduced us to the Man from
Galilee. He has made the crucial difference in the lives of the
most committed people who have ever lived. He gives us the energy
and the endurance we need to be the best that we can be. He brings
deep satisfaction into every heart that is open to his love. Most
important of all, there is a man hanging on a cross to whom we owe
everything we are and hope to be. How do we pay that debt? By
passing his love on to others. Offer them Christ.
Dear Jesus, moved me to offer others the gift you bring. Amen.
