Remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
(1 Thessalonians 1.3 NRSV)

For thirty-five years, Kate Walker kept the light burning in the lighthouse at Robins Reef lighthouse where the Atlantic flows into New York harbor. The government pensioned Kate in 1922 and she moved to Staten Island where she could see the light flashing across the dark waters. Kate confessed it was often hard and lonely at the lighthouse, but she stayed with it and tended the light because "Jake said to me, Mind the light, Katie. Mind the light!'" I had to be faithful to what Jake told me to do, Kate told a neighbor.

Jake was her husband. For three years Kate, Jake, and their two children lived all alone at the lighthouse. Every five seconds the lamp on top of the lighthouse revolved, flashing its signal to the incoming seamen to warn them of the long, dangerous reef that lay ahead of them. Then Jake took sick and had to be rowed by boat to the hospital two miles across the harbor. Ten lonely days and nights later Kate received word that Jake had died.

His last words to Katie before he was taken away were, "Mind the light, Katie. Mind the light!"

Are you minding God's light of faith, love and hope?

Loving God, guide me as I share you light. Amen.
