For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 8.38-39 NRSV)

There is a story of a poor artist who was regally entertained in a castle. It was one of the high moments in his life. However, he had nothing with which to repay his friends. Before leaving, however, he shut himself up in his room for some days, locking the door, and refusing to come out, or to let any one in. When he finally came out and bade his hosts, "Adieu!" a servant found the sheets of his bed missing, and thought that he must have stolen them. They searched further, however, and found the missing sheets in one corner of the room. Unrolling them they discovered a glorious picture painted upon them. The artist needed to say thank you. He did it by using the one gift that he had.

So did Robby Benfield. Benfield was abandoned as an infant by his mother in Carter County, Tennessee. His last name came from the woman in whose barn he was later found. The county raised him as an orphan until he was old enough to join the Navy.

It would certainly have been easy for a man with that background to feel that no one gave him "what he deserved." Robby, though, left his life's savings of $51,000 to Carter County, TN when he died. He said that he wanted to help repay them for seeing that he was raised and schooled.

It would be easy to become bitter for the wrongs of life, but what a blessings God gives in Jesus Christ. In Christ, we are reminded, that no matter what life throws our way, God loves us more than anything in all of creation.

Dear God, how can I become bitter after receiving your never ending love? Amen.
