"The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many."
(Matthew 20.28 NRSV)

It's interesting to watch the rising esteem with which the national press is regarding former president, Jimmy Carter. While he was in office many of them felt he wasn't a very good president, but most of them now agree he's the best ex-president we've ever had. Why? He's devoted himself to a life of serving.

Is there anyone in this room who is not convinced? We all know it's true--even if we sometimes forget it. I hope all of us will discovery the joy of service before it is too late. We have some problems in our society that cannot be solved until more people are as concerned with giving as with gaining. That's the first lesson Jesus teaches us that greatness is measured not by what we gain, but by what we give. The second lesson is like unto the first.

Lord Jesus, you came to serve all of God's people. Continue to teach me to also serve. Amen.
