"I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly."
Now consider our Jesus. His teachings are the finest ever recorded, but you are not reading this
because he was a great teacher. Jesus had a way with crowds. The common people heard him
gladly. But you are not reading this because of his public speaking. He was a great healer. He
healed the blind, the lame, those with serious emotional disturbances. But that's not why your
are reading this devotion. You are reading this because of who Jesus was--or better yet, who he
is today. He is the Son of God who died and rose to bring us into God's kingdom.
(John 10.10
NRSV)
A study was done about how people attain a permanent place in the memories of their
countrymen. For example, of the thousands of past major league baseball players, only a few
are remembered. Ask several people to name the most famous baseball players of all time and
they are likely to say Ruth, Cobb, and Gehrig. The same question asked about football players
produces the names Grange, Unitas, and Brown. If asked to name the greats of opera, they will
say Caruso, Bjorling, and Callas. All of these celebrities have earned a permanent place in our
memories as a people.
Dear Jesus, thank you for coming and leading me to God's kingdom of salvation. Amen.
