"Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a
wise man who built his house on rock."
Jesus, when speaking on the building of life, often used the image of a rock. In fact Jesus, in
concluding His Sermon on the Mount, stated that life, if it is to be durable, must be built on a
rock. He made a definite connection, a distinct correlation, between the ground on which we
build and the durability of what we build.
What is the foundation of your life built on?
(Matthew 7.24
NRSV)
Quite possibly the largest mausoleum in the world is the Taj Mahal. Under construction from
1632 to 1645, that oversized tombstone required over 20,000 men in the process of
construction. It took 76 years to build the Great Pyramids of Egypt near Cairo. It required 7-1/2
years for Solomon's temple to be built. Ten thousand men were used in the process of cutting
timber from Lebanon. Another 70,000 men were used for carrying the wood and constructing the
temple, and another 20,900 men were used as overseers or supervisors. All three groups of
men were involved in a 7-1/2-year building program for Solomon's temple. As diverse as these
three buildings are, the Taj Mahal, the Great Pyramids of Egypt and the Temple of Solomon,
there is a truth common to all, for, you see, all were built for durability. They were built to stay,
and their durability was grounded on rock.
Dear Jesus, you are my foundation. Please help me to make you the foundation in every part of
my life. Amen.
