When the ways of people please the LORD, he causes even their enemies to be
at peace with them.
President Lincoln responded by commenting, "I am not at all concerned about that for we know
that the Lord is always on the side of right. But it is my constant anxiety and prayer that I and this
nation should choose to be on the Lord's side."
Today we know the things that will make for peace, but will we do them? Blessed are the
peace-makers for they are the children of God.
Discipleship begins with such a choice. To be on the Lord's side is far more an important issue
than trying to get the Lord to be on our side.
(Proverbs 16.7
NRSV)
Abraham Lincoln was once asked by a member of a certain church who was making a plea for a
certain cause and closed his remarks with the pious hope "that the Lord is on our side."
Lord Jesus, may the peace that you have given to me, pass through me, as I work to create
peace in this world. Amen.
