Yes, brother, let me have this benefit from you in the Lord! Refresh my heart in
Christ.
As one devout fellow prayed: "Lord, grant that the heat in my heart will melt the lead in my feet."
That's a pretty good prayer. We want the kind of excitement, the kind of enthusiasm, that
motivates us to change.
(Philemon 1.20
NRSV)
Sometimes we get excited, enthusiastic, revved up and nothing happens except we feel good.
This is one reason the church has always viewed with suspicion excessive enthusiasm. There
is always the danger of putting our emphasis on the experience, the good feeling, the
EXCITEMENT of the Spirit and neglecting the FRUITS of the Spirit. Enthusiasm that does not
lead to a more godly life is more of an obstacle than a stepping stone to discipleship.
Dear Jesus, change my heart as I change my attitude in helping your people. Amen.
