Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples approached
him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field."
I like Zig Ziglar's story of the woman who went to her pastor for counseling concerning her
marriage. The minister wanting to help asked, "Do you have any GROUNDS?" To which the
lady responded, "Why, yes we do, we have about ten acres just north of town." "No, ma'am," the
pastor replied, "that's not what I mean. Do you have a GRUDGE?" "Oh, no," she replied, "but we
do have a nice little carport!" "No, ma'am," said the pastor, "that's not what I meant. Does your
husband beat you up?" "Beat me up? Oh, no, I get up before he does just about every morning!"
In complete exasperation the pastor said, "Lady, you're not listening to me. Why are having
trouble with your husband?" "Well," she said, "the man just doesn't know how to communicate!"
This woman obviously had a hard time communicating. Many people in their marriages have a
hard time communicating too. Good communication is important to having a great marriage and
a great relationship with God.
(Matthew 13.36
NRSV)
Jesus prayed and communicated with God a lot. Jesus also communicated well with his
disciples. Jesus often spoke in parables. The disciples did not fully understand these parables,
so Jesus would take them aside and teach them. Through his communication he built a close
and mutually committed relationship with his disciples.
Dear Jesus, help me communicate with those I love. Amen.
