But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, "he sat down at
the right hand of God."
He was asked if he knew anyone who had ever reached this stage
in life. He replied that from what he had read about the
sacrificial life of Dr. Albert Schweitzer he felt that Dr.
Schweitzer had perhaps reached that stage of selfless living.
He then told how Dr. Schweitzer, as a young man, had been an
accomplished musician and an outstanding theologian and author.
Yet he gave up those great professions to study medicine and then
to go to Africa to serve those who could never appreciate the
sacrifice he had made for them. He concluded by saying, "When Dr.
Schweitzer was asked why he was willing to make such a sacrifice,
he replied, 'Because Jesus asked me to do it.'" That was good
enough for Dr. Schweitzer. "Jesus asked me to do it."
What sacrifices are you making for God's people?
(Hebrews 10.12
NRSV)
A noted professor was being interviewed. A reporter asked,
"Doctor, in your opinion what is the highest stage of development
that a human being can attain?" The professor answered, "I believe
the highest stage of moral development a person can reach is that
of post conversion." When he was asked the meaning of "post
conversion," he replied, "Post conversion is the stage that is
reached by only a few persons. It is a stage where a person is
able to give himself or herself to others without any or with
little concern for self interest."
Dear Jesus, thank you for making such a great sacrifice for me. Guide me in making the
necessary sacrifices for your people. Amen.
