Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense,
and myrrh.
John Canuso, through his generosity, enables other persons to experience a family Christmas
as well. Anne Denenberg, his secretary for 20 years, recalls a phone call from a young woman
whose nephew in North Carolina had leukemia. "She wanted to know if he could be "brought to
Philadelphia's Children's Hospital for treatment. During the course of the conversation she broke
into tears. It would be the first Christmas the entire family could not be together."
Canuso rented a bus, hired a driver, and told her to gather all of her family. At 11:00 p.m. on
Christmas Eve, the bus left with all the kids, the aunts, the uncles, and the grandparents. They
drove all through the night and the family spent Christmas with the nephew in the hospital. His
secretary of many years said, "John was working quietly and without fanfare. He could not
conceive of this family not being together on Christmas. He feels he has so much, it makes him
feel better to give."
That's the kind of response you and I need to make today to this wonderful story of Mary and
Joseph. That's the kind of response that has been happening in people's lives through the telling
of the Christmas story for two thousand years. It is the response of love. It is the believing in the
possibility of redemption of all people--for who knows whom might be an angel in disguise. It is
listening to the voice of God and believing that all good things are possible.
(Matthew 2.11
NRSV)
I read once about John Canuso. Canuso is credited with helping start the first Ronald McDonald
house in Philadelphia. John is a big family man who enjoys dressing up as Santa. Christmas
has always been a big deal to him. He wants everyone together for Christmas so he invites
family members over to spend the night on Christmas Eve. On Christmas morning he insists
that they walk downstairs one by one so he can videotape them. Later he passes out the
presents dressed in his Santa outfit. "He makes our family work," reflected his grown daughter.
Dear Jesus, help me to give as you have given to me. Amen.
