But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a
dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child
conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
An angel of God spoke to Joseph through a dream. Scientists who have studied brain patterns of
people sleeping report an "internal storm" of activity when a person is having a dream. There are
many books available today that offer interpretations of dreams. Dr. John Priest helps us
understand the difference between many of the dreams interpreted today and the dreams
recorded in the Bible. "The present preoccupation with dreams is inwardly oriented; what does
the dream reveal about my existence? The Biblical view of the dream is quite otherwise." (5)
Instead of focusing on our own needs and aspirations, dreams in the Bible revealed God's will or
plan for that individual. In studying over 80,000 dreams Carl Jung has discovered that many
dreams reflect a "process of spiritual growth." God speaks to us in many ways. Are we
listening?
(Matthew 1.20
NRSV)
God communicates with us in many ways. It was while Joseph was sleeping that an angel from
God spoke to him. "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife," the angel
told Joseph, "for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit." The angel told Joseph that he
had the responsibility of naming the child Jesus, "for he will save his people from their sins."
Dear God, help me to be a good listener of the direction you have for my life. Amen.
