Wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the child who has
been born king of the Jews?
Notice that the Wise Men were the very first to call the Baby Jesus, "King of the Jews." That's a
little bit unusual. Tradition tells us that they themselves were not Jews. But somehow they knew
that there was a place for them at the manger. In the babe of Bethlehem they see God's
promise that Jesus will be the Savior for all the world. Jews and Gentiles, rich folks and poor,
men and women of every color and nation--all are included in God's plan. The three men from
the east had a right to be there. They belonged.
(Matthew 2.1-2
NRSV)
The wise men, after a profitless stop to consult with Herod in Jerusalem, they once again begin
following the star. It seems to be moving, leading the way to the Baby Jesus. Soon it stops over
the little village of Bethlehem. The wise men find the place where Jesus is and kneel down and
offer him the finest gifts known in all the world--gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Lord Jesus, help to always follow you and your ways as my king. Amen.
