But Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and
proclaim the kingdom of God." Another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to
those at my home." Jesus said to him, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit
for the kingdom of God."
Victor Frankl, another spiritual giant, has written:
"Unless a man wishes to drown he has to become selective. That is
to say, he has to become able to select when to turn on the TV
set, when to turn it off, what books and what journals to read
and what to throw in the wastebasket. Selectiveness means that we
have to be responsible for what is important and what is not,
what is essential and what is not, what is valuable and what is
not, what is meaningful and what is not. We have to be capable or
become capable of such decision making."
Jesus calls us to do those things that really matter.
(Luke 9:60-62
NRSV)
It was said of Brother Lawrence, author
of the medieval classic, THE PRACTICE OF THE PRESENCE OF GOD,
that although he never hurried and never worked quickly, he did
twice as much work as anyone else because he always did exactly
what needed to be done.
Lord Jesus, help me to focus on those things that are important to your kingdom. Amen.
