For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who
sent me.
(John 6.38
NRSV)
There are some persons who think Christians are being
presumptuous when we proclaim that He is the way, the truth, and
the life and that there is no other means of reaching God. But
they miss the beauty of this mystery of the incarnation. If there
is one thing religion has taught us, it is that it is a vain
gesture to reach up to God. Our arms are not long enough. All of
the so-called paths to God are inadequate. How can finite minds
wrap themselves around the infinite? It is not we who have
reached up to God. He has reached down to us. He has become one
of us and somehow through the miracle of the cross He has made it
possible for us to share in His eternal glory.
Loving God, yes, it is impossible for me to reach you. Come close to me in Jesus and touch me
with your holy love. Amen.
