"Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will
give you rest."
"She went on to tell him that she got up every morning at
5:30--fixed breakfast and made lunches for her husband and
children. After she got her husband off to work and the kids off
to school, she tidied up the house a bit. Then she caught the
bus which took her across town where she spent the day cleaning
houses. Late each afternoon she took another bus home, arriving
just in time to fix supper. Then there was laundry to do, and
homework the kids needed help with, leaving no time for herself.
Generally, around midnight, she would collapse into bed for a few
hours of exhausted sleep only to arise the next morning to do it
all over again.
"She was okay--just weary in well-doing--a little
disillusioned with her life, perhaps, and wondering whatever
happened to her dreams, (and experiencing some guilt) for feeling
that way since she had such an obviously hardworking husband and
such good kids."
This may be you or someone you know. Jesus says, "Come to me, all you that are weary and
are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest."
(Matthew 11.28
NRSV)
"It happened late one afternoon as Pastor Charles Blair was leaving the
church parking lot at the end of a demanding day. As he turned
onto the street, he caught sight of a woman sitting at the bus
stop, alone and weeping. He circled the block, parked the car
and made his way to her. Introducing himself, he asked if she was
all right. His concern obviously embarrassed her. She hastily
dried her tears and said, 'Yes, I'm fine. Just tired, that's
all. Really tired.'
God of peace, give all of us rest and peace. Amen.
