For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone unwilling to work should not eat.
(2 Thessalonians 3.10 NRSV)

It is difficult to pick any text from the Scriptures that fits everybody. Consider today's lesson from the Epistle. It deals with the problem of idleness. "For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone unwilling to work should not eat." Paul roars.

There is a story about a fellow who was employed by a duke and duchess in Europe.

"James," said the duchess to this employee, "how long have you been with us?"
"About thirty years," he replied.
"According to my records," said the duchess, "you were employed to look after the dog."
"Yes, Ma'am," James replied.
"James, that dog died twenty-seven years ago."
"Yes, ma'am." he said "What would you like me to do now?"

Perhaps you know somebody like that. They're around. There is much work for the kingdom that needs to be done. Let's not be idle.

Loving God, forgive me for my idleness and help me to work with great effort for your kingdom. Amen.
