Daily Devotions - A Few Moments
With God

And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples.
(Matthew 9.10 NRSV)

John Brodie, former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, was once asked why a superstar like himself should have to hold the ball for field goals and points after touchdown. "Well," said Brodie, "if I didn't, the ball would fall over." No false pride. No obnoxious pretense. Brodie understood his place in the scheme of things. He was probably a very coachable player.

There's no hope for people who think they have already arrived. Why should I bother to do these devotions if you think you already know everything you need to know about Christ and faith? What a waste of my time and yours. Jesus came into the world to introduce people to a new reality. There was no need for him to waste his precious time with persons who thought they already knew it all. Jesus worked and lived with sinners, first of all, because they know they still have room to grow.

Dear God, help me to never stop growing close to you. Amen.
