Those who are generous are blessed, for they share their bread with the poor.
If God has allowed us to prosper, it
is our joyful opportunity to share. No person can be
called successful if he or she has not learned to share.
(Proverbs 22.9
NRSV)
In Eugene O'Neill's play, DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS, the
drama centers on the character of Ephraim Cabot, a closefisted,
greedy, self-righteous hypocrite. Through a series of tragedies,
the play ends with Ephraim Cabot left alone on his farm. His
self-centered goals have led to the death of his wife and to
nothing but hatred and rejection from his sons. As the sheriff
leaves Ephraim there by himself, the sheriff comments that it is
the best farm in the county, a place anyone would want to own.
It may have been the best farm around, but it was probably the
loneliest place around as well. Certainly Ephraim Cabot had
discovered the truth of Jesus' teaching about those who gain the
whole world but lose their soul.
Dear God, often my life is filled with wants, but you given so much to me. Move me to share.
Amen.
