But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was
beating his breast and saying, "God, be merciful to me, a sinner!"
Jesus likes sinners who do not look down on others.
(Luke 18.13
NRSV)
Many years ago there was a French play about a group of
persons preparing to enter the Pearly Gates. There was quite a
mob of them. Some had been quite righteous. Others had not. Some
of those who had been morally upright were outraged that the
others were going into heaven. These moral misfits did not belong
there! It was unfair. It was unjust. As the wait to go into
heaven grew longer the anxiety and the anger of the righteous
members of the mob grew, until finally some of them began to
curse those whom they felt should not be allowed into the
presence of the Almighty. When they did that, they lost their
place within the heavenly realm, for they had failed the most
important test of all--the test of compassion.
Dear God, give me Christ's heart so that I may look upon all your people with love. Amen.
