For to this end we toil and struggle, because we have our hope set on the living
God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.
Some of us can identify with that. We've got bills to pay, college to prepare for, retirement
savings to think about. Some of us are overwhelmed with the cost of just getting by.
But, God doesn't want us to just get by. God was us to live life fully with the joy of a savior,
Jesus Christ. Jesus won't take the struggle of life away, but Jesus will make us whole.
(1 Timothy 4.10
NRSV)
Columnist Herb Caen wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle sometime back: "Every morning in
Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to
death. It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle; when the sun comes up, you'd
better be running."
Dear God, move me out of the "just getting by" circumstance of life into your glorious joy of
salvation. Amen.
