Then Jesus told his disciples, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny
themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
God also comes to us as a loving parent. God really cares about us even more than our
parents do. Now, I realize you may feel like I did about my parents when I was a teenager. I felt
they were more interested in enforcing their petty rules than loving me, so I could be free to
live and learn about life for myself. Our parents do love us deeply, but God loves us even
more.
This is why God has come to us as a savior. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that
he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not parish but may have
eternal life." If we deny our desires and accept Christ, then we can fully experience God's love
and forgiveness in our own lives.
(Matthew 16.24
NRSV)
God also comes to us as a guide. In John 10:11, Jesus said, "I am the good shepherd. The
good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." If we deny ourselves, our desires, then Christ
will guide us to a new way of living and loving for one another.
Dear God, help me to deny my own desires as I accept Christ and walk with him. Amen.
