Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the
Father except through me.
Christ's way is the best way. Deep in our heart of hearts we know that. Why, then, do we not
do what he says?
(John 14.6
NRSV)
In 1900, two South American neighbors, Chile and Argentina, were preparing for war over their
disputed mountain boundary. Bishop Benoventa asked in his Easter sermon, "Why not make
friends with our neighbor?" Leaders listened. Before long the two countries signed a Treaty
of Arbitration, pledging to arbitrate disputes. To seal their peaceful intents, guns were melted
to make the striking statue CHRIST OF THE ANDES. It was placed high on the mountain
boundary. At its dedication Chileans and Argentineans knelt at the feet of Christ. They saw His
hands outstretched in blessing over them both and realized their brotherhood. Never again
have these countries warred.
Dear God, forgive me when I fall short of following Christ's way. Lift me up and help me to
follow the way that leads to the fulness of life. Amen.
