But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will
teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.
Hugh Missildine says that fear is one of the earliest emotions that a baby experiences, and
that all fears tend to be variations of three basic ones: the fear of falling, the fear of loud
noises, and the fear of being abandoned.
Most of us learn to deal with the first two. Some of us have problems with heights. The fear of
falling is still with us but for most it is not debilitating. As we get older we may not fear loud
noises like we did as an infant. The fear of abandonment, however, is a subtle fear of which
we may not even be aware, but which may get ever more acute as the years pass. It's no fun
being left alone.
But Jesus says to us, "That can't happen. I will never leave you alone. I am going to the
Father, but I will send a Counselor to be with you."
(John 14.26
NRSV)
Advice columnist Ann Landers receives something like 10,000 letters per month. When asked
which topics are the subject of most of the letters, she answered that most people were afraid
of something. They were afraid of losing their health or their marriage or their job. They
were afraid even when there were no tangible grounds for their fears. Do you know anyone
like that?
Lord Jesus, remind me daily of your presence in my life, as I overcome my fears. Amen.
