Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of
Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
That is a most encouraging truth to me. Yes, the church of our day has its human made flaws,
but it is a place for us to grow in our commitment to God through Jesus Christ.
How about coming over to my place before the game? -God
(Acts 2.38
NRSV)
Note the scene at the church's birth. The disciples were gathered all together in one place. But
this was no constitutional convention. No one turned to Simon Peter and said, "Pete, you call
the meeting to order. And after Matt has the invocation, we will get on with the business of
starting this new organization called the church." Nothing like that occurred. The Scripture tells
us simply that as they were gathered in one place, "suddenly a sound came from heaven like a
mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them
tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each of them. And they were all filled with the
Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." That is
how the church was born--not from below but from above.
God of all, may my church be more godly because of my presence. Amen.
