I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.
(Romans 7.15 NRSV)

That is one of the most mystifying questions in the world. "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not what I tell you?"

Why do people stand at the altar of a church and promise that they will be loyal to that church and support it by their prayers, presence, gifts and service, and then promptly disappear? Why did they bother to join in the first place?

And most disturbingly of all, why do people claim the name of Christian, follower of Jesus Christ, and then live in a way that is totally contrary to everything for which Jesus stood?

And yet we know it happens. "Why do you call me,'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you?" It is a mystifying question.

Thank goodness, our God is a God of grace.

Lord Jesus, yes, I am a sinner, and I am in great need of your love, grace and forgiveness. Amen.
