Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets, said much to encourage and
strengthen the believers.
Many of you have already learned how encouraging it is when you are going through a terrible
trial to know that someone is praying for you. The church, you and me, have a great calling to
encourage and pray for one another.
(Acts 15.32
NRSV)
Captain Gerald L. Coffee was a pilot in Viet Nam whose plane was shot down in 1966. He was
a prisoner of war in that ravaged nation for seven years and nine days. He spent much of his
time in solitary confinement in those seven years, nine days. During those years he was
allowed to write only twelve six-line postcards to his wife. "Faith was the key to survival," he
recalls. And he also remembers how he and the other prisoners developed a tap code so they
could send encouraging messages of hope from cell to cell. "Gut it out," the messages said.
"I'm praying for you."
Dear God, may those I encourage be encouraged and may your will be done. Amen.
