There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with
punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love.
Why do we allow ourselves to hate others? Here is a practical truth we all need to know. The
angry person is a fearful person. It is out of insecurity that we strike out. Fear of our own worth,
our own adequacy, our own acceptance. Why could Jesus accept and love all people? There
was not an insecure bone in his body. He knew who he was! Thus he feared no one.
(1 John 4.18
NRSV)
Saul met Christ. And what he experienced was a conversion of his whole heart. He was
converted to an entirely new personality. The man who consented to the stoning of Stephen
became the man who could write in I Corinthians 13, "Love ...does not insist on its own way; it
is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrong but rejoices in the right...." How does a
man change that radically? It happens when he moves from a life dominated by fear to a life
dominated by faith.
Dear God, take away my fear through Christ my Lord and Savior. Amen.
