They have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them
on in a manner worthy of God.
The unhappy writer of Ecclesiastes said it best: "Two are better than one, because they have a
good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone
when he falls and has not another to lift him up." (4:9-10)
We need one another. Our faith was never meant to be lived out in isolation. People who say,
"Jesus, Yes; the church, no!" simply do not understand the Gospel. We are to support, pray
for, and encourage one another.
That does not always happen in the body of Christ. Melancthon once compared the strife torn
church to a pack of dogs sent out to do war with some wolves. The wolves sent out a scouting
party to check out the approaching dogs. The scouts reported back to the wolves that there
was nothing to worry about. As the dogs were advancing they were nipping and snarling and
biting at each other. Therefore, even though the dogs had superior numbers, they were no
threat to the wolves.
(3 John 1.6
NRSV)
"See how those Christians love one another." That has always been the witness of the church
in an unloving world. Remember how Jesus said, "Wherever two or three are
gathered together in my name, there will I be also." Why two or three? Why not only one?
God of all, bring unity to Christ's church that we may do a better job of bringing people to your
kingdom. Amen.
