Easter Sunday, March 31, 2002
The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said
to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.
I could not help but be struck by the fact that the archaeologists found the high priest's
decayed body in his tomb, but nobody has ever found the body of Jesus.
On this Easter Sunday, we remember that the tomb is empty and Jesus is alive.
(Luke 24.5
NRSV)
Several years ago there was a news report that intrigued me. It reported that archaeologists in
Israel had excavated the tomb of Caiaphas, the high priest. It was Caiaphas who presided over
the plot to have Jesus arrested, convicted and crucified. Do you know what they discovered
when they opened Caiaphas' tomb? They found Caiaphas' decayed body.
Loving God, may Jesus always be alive in my heart. Amen.
