In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your
good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
Expecting a new slant on the old gospel story, David replied, "No."
Big sister continued: "Sit still, 'cause this is real scary."
After explaining the gospel as only an 8-year-old could, she popped the question: "Now David,
when you die, do you want to go to heaven to be with Jesus, God, your mommy and daddy
and big sister, or do you want to go to the lake of fire to be with the Devil and bank robbers?"
David thought a moment, then replied, "I want to stay right here."
Debbie might not have presented the gospel with much sophistication, but she is on the right
track. She was trying to offer her younger brother Jesus.
John Wesley, the 18th century Anglican priest who set off the great Wesleyan revival that
swept England and America, was putting Thomas Coke on a ship to his new assignment. Mr.
Wesley was sending Coke to give leadership to a rapidly growing church in the new world, now
known as the United States of America. Tradition tells
us that Mr. Wesley gave Mr. Coke only three words of advice, "Offer them Christ."
His simple advice will remind many of you of Mother Teresa's words to a reporter summing up
life's her work. She said, "I give them Jesus."
May Christ shine brightly through us today.
(Matthew 5.16
NRSV)
After listening to pastor Chuck Swindoll on the radio, 8-year-old Debbie asked 6-year-old
brother David, "Do you know about Jesus?"
Dear God, may my heart be an open window as Christ touches all those I meet today. Amen.
