Your decrees are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart.
Imagine, if you will, your baptism as a kiss that has been passed down for 2,000 years from
the time John baptized Jesus in the river Jordan. Each time we celebrate the Lord's Supper,
imagine it as a kiss from the Master that has been passed down through countless generations
since that time when Jesus broke bread in the Upper Room and said to his disciples, "This is
my body which was broken for you...This is my blood which was shed for you...."
The meaning behind the church of Jesus Christ is far greater than simply keeping alive a
sacred heritage, but what a wonderful heritage we have.
(Psalm
119.111
NRSV)
Andor Foldes was a renowned concert pianist. At age 16 he had the privilege of playing for the
last surviving pupil of the immortal, Franz Liszt, Emil von Sauer. Foldes played numbers from
Bach, Beethoven, and Schumann. Then Sauer rose and kissed him on
the forehead. He said, "My son, when I was your age, I became a student of Liszt. He kissed
me on the forehead after my first lesson saying, 'Take good care of this kiss--it comes from
Beethoven who gave it to me after hearing me play.' I have waited for years to pass on this
sacred heritage, but now I feel you deserve it."
Dear God, may the great sacred heritage of Christ continue to touch and bless me, as I trust in
you more and more. Amen.
