When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the
house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood
among them and said, "Peace be with you."
We know where we came from. We know where we are headed. Let us not stop in bring
others the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ.
(John 20.19
NRSV)
The book of Acts tells us the story of our beginnings: A handful of believers hovering behind
closed doors, who on the Day of Pentecost received the blessing of the Holy Spirit and began
testifying first to Israel and later to the Gentile world that Jesus Christ is the long awaited
Messiah. In spite of fierce and often cruel opposition they told their story all over the Roman
empire. The response was so great that by the end of the second century, Tertullian could
write that "the outcry is that the state is filled with Christians--that they are in the fields; in the
cities...people of both sexes, every age and status, even those of high rank, are passing over
to the profession of the Christian faith."
God of salvation, help me to share your love in Jesus Christ. Amen.
