Do you want to be shown, you senseless person, that faith apart from works is barren?
(James 2.20 NRSV)

Daniel E. Scold of Roanoke, Virginia tells of a beautiful home a realtor showed to him and his wife sometime back. The previous owner had vacated months before. The house was empty except for 42 pieces of beautifully framed needlework hanging on the walls, which apparently no one wanted.

A little detective work revealed that the owner's wife had taken her own life several months before. The messages on several pieces of the needlework were telling in that light. One piece, however, particularly haunted Scold. It said, "She who dies with the most yarn wins." A little bit of whimsy, but also a sad commentary. This woman had a hobby that was important to her, but it wasn't enough to make up for the barrenness of her life.

There are places in our lives that need to be filled. Let's fill those places with the love, hope, joy and forgiveness of Jesus Christ our savior and redeemer.

Dear God, fill the barren places of my life with your Son and Savior. Amen.
