Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose.
(1 Corinthians 1.10 NRSV)

We are essential. If our hands take the day off, how shall we eat? If our eyes decide to go on strike, what is to keep us from bumping into things? If our feet decide they've carried an unfair share of the load and resign, how shall we move about? We are part of a team and everyone has something they can do.

There are, however, some who think of themselves as what we might call "Lone Ranger" Christians. These Lone Rangers think they can serve Christ without being part of the team. Robert Hastings has designed a "Do-It-Yourself Worship Kit!" for such people.

"Here's what you'll find in each carefully planned package:
"One portable, lightweight seat, shaped like a church pew. Can be set up anywhere.
"One small, paper covered hymnal containing one dozen well-known hymns (words and music).
"One harmonica--or mouth organ--to take the place of the church organ. (Frankly, you will find it difficult to play and sing at the same time. But you can master it, and after all there must be some challenge.)
"One abbreviated New Testament with familiar selections designed to be read in less than one minute each.
"One small offering plate--to be held in the left hand while putting coin in with the right.
(Denomination of the coin is unimportant as you will get it back anyway.)
"One brief sermon entitled 'What a Good Boy Am I.' You will feel much better after using this sermon. It may be read aloud or silently.
"Those who have used our Do-It-Yourself Worship Kit," says Hastings, "tell us they get an extra lift from their own service if at the close, they rush to a mirror and shake hands with themselves. But this is optional."

Biblically, to be a follower of Christ is to be part of a family.

God of community, strengthen my roots in Christ's family of faith, the church. Amen.
