I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so
that you may know that you have eternal life.
(1 John 5:13
NRSV)
A group of young campers were backpacking in a West Virginia woods. Stopping at a
spring, they filled their water canteens and drank. Three strangers came upon the
group and, intending to have a little fun, explained that the water was known to be
contaminated; they said it had made other campers deathly ill. The strangers soon
realized their joke was having unexpected results. Several in the party soon became
very ill and it took much effort to get the sick out of the woods for treatment. What
happened? Was the water really polluted? No, the water was quite safe to drink. But
the powerful force of belief soured the digestive process of those who became ill.
Beliefs are powerful. The central question in life is, what do you really believe?
Dear God, I believe in You and in Your son Jesus Christ. And may the Savior who lives
in me, touch all aspects of my life. Amen.
