In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in
the Jordan.
One day, Mark tells us in his typically succinct manner, Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee,
and was baptized by John in the Jordan River. The moment Jesus came up out of the water,
he saw the heavens open and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove descending on him, and a
voice from heaven said, "You are my beloved Son; you are my Delight." This was a pivotal
moment in Jesus' life and, if we understand the meaning of baptism, should change us forever.
(Mark 1.9
NRSV)
There was a minister who, at his first baptism, became stagestruck. Standing in the baptismal
pool with the candidate for this sacred rite, the pastor suffered a complete lapse of memory.
He became so muddled that he forgot which sacrament he was administering. Eyes
heavenward, he borrowed words from the communion service instead of the baptismal service
and gave this command: "Drink ye all of this!" Now there is a challenge for you.
Dear Jesus, may the water of my baptism continue to change my life as I live for you. Amen.
