And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 4.19 NRSV)

There are a lot of foolish ideas and there are many foolish people. Many of them are like the little boy whose first-grade teacher was asking her class about their parents' religious beliefs. "My Daddy is Jewish and my Mommy is Catholic," this little fellow volunteered. A classmate asked, "How do you know which religion you should believe in?" "Well, I believe in everything," the first boy said. "What do you mean you believe in everything?" another student asked. "You know, Jesus, Moses, the Easter bunny, everything."

Believing in everything will not do us any good. We must believe in something specific--the power of God through Christ at work in our lives. This is where we need to separate ourselves from the positive thinking crowd--as helpful as positive thinking is. Sooner or later, though, positive thinking proves inadequate to true empowerment. What is needed is not positive thinking but positive faith. We have received Christ into our lives, and we believe that he is able to do for us all that we will ever truly need.

Lord Jesus, thank you for giving me everything I really need. Amen.
