For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that
foundation is Jesus Christ.
That afternoon, sitting in the famous Canterbury Cathedral, he experienced God in a way he
never had before. "I can only call it, without exaggeration," he said "a conversion experience."
Geoffrey had gone to church as a teenager without the gospel ever really taking hold of him
like it did that day. "Now, I suddenly realized," Geoffrey reflected, "in the most profound insight
of my life, that I had found my roots. I found myself shaken to the very foundation of my
being."
How is God shaking your foundation?
(1 Corinthians 3.11
NRSV)
Between 1971 and 1975 Geoffrey's life took a negative turn. There were problems in his
personal life and problems at work. Geoffrey decided to take a vacation. Perhaps being away
from his problems would help him solve them. He went to England chiefly to visit museums
and listen to concerts. While he was in England he planned to visit some cathedrals like any
other tourist would. "I made my pilgrimage to England in a more than usual state of emotional
turmoil," Geoffrey admits, "but without any hint of what was in store for me." One afternoon as
he was touring England he heard of a concert at Canterbury Cathedral. He decided to go. At
the appropriate time he entered the cathedral and sat down. "I had nothing more in mind that
just listening to music casually and looking forward to a beer in a pub with some friends
afterward," he says of that experience.
Dear Jesus, change the foundation of my life to your solid rock. Amen.
