Daily Devotions - A Few Moments
With God

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us."
(Luke 2:15 NRSV)

God is not a God of whom we need to live in fear and loathing, as many people do. God is not an insecure dictator, an intolerant tyrant as many have portrayed God. God is pure, unlimited, unbounded love. We don't need to beat our chest and rend our garments and cry out, "Oh, God have mercy on me, have mercy on me." There is no un-mercy in God. We can approach God like a loving parent in confidence and joy and in the assurance that God will never turn us away.

Do you believe in that kind of God? Some people have a really messed-up picture of God in their minds and hearts. Some of us who have been in the church all our lives truly need to experience a re-birth in terms of our perception of who God is. We need to take one long, last, lingering look into the manger of Bethlehem. Then we need to look at Herod, the petty tyrant on his throne and we need to say to ourselves, God is more like the Bethlehem babe than like Herod.

Lord Jesus, renew my image of God through the birth of Jesus who grew into my savior and who brought me from darkness to hope, love and light. Amen.
