To you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.
(Luke 2:11 NRSV)

I want to tell you a story about a little boy named Thomas. Thomas was born many years ago, back in the 1840s. That's about 150 years ago. When Thomas was little, his teachers thought he wasn't very smart. They thought that Thomas would never learn anything. They didn't want him in their class. So Thomas' parents took him out of school, and he never went back after that. His mother kept him home and taught him there at home. Thomas seemed to get in trouble a lot. When he was twelve years old, he was in an bad accident. The accident injured Thomas' ears, and he lost a lot of his hearing. Thomas' parents must have worried that he would have a hard life, and that he would never succeed at anything. But they were wrong. When Thomas grew up, he became a great inventor, one of the greatest inventors in America. His name was Thomas Edison. One of Thomas Edison's greatest inventions was the electric light and light bulb. If you'll look around, you'll see how many lights we use to light up the darkness. Thomas Edison's inventions are just as important today as they were many years ago. But when he was little, no one would have believed that the little boy who did so poorly in school, who was partially deaf, would grow up to be one of our greatest inventors.

In the same way, when Jesus was born, not many people expected that this little baby was the Son of God. He wasn't big and powerful. He wasn't rich and famous. Jesus didn't look like a great King. But He was the Son of God. And when He grew up, He began preaching to the people, and teaching them, and healing them of sickness, and doing miracles. And He died to save us all from our sins. God didn't send the kind of king everyone expected. God sent us just what we needed a savior.

Dear God, I am very grateful that you sent me just what I needed. Amen.
